AWS User Group Kosova’s latest meetup tackled one of the most common questions we hear from engineers early in their careers: how do you actually move from working in the cloud to working in DevOps? Around ten participants — a mix of students, database administrators, and full-stack developers — joined for an evening that combined a presentation, open discussion, and hands-on practice.
Watching a room of different backgrounds — students next to database administrators next to full-stack developers — map out the same infrastructure and arrive at the same understanding is what these sessions are for.
From concepts to a working diagram
The session opened with a walkthrough of the AWS skills and tools that actually matter for a Cloud-to-DevOps transition — not a theoretical overview, but the building blocks engineers reach for on the job. From there, the group moved into the part of the evening that stuck: attendees built their own infrastructure diagrams from scratch and explained, piece by piece, how each component connected to the next. It’s one thing to recognize AWS services on a slide; it’s another to reason through how they fit together into something that runs. Watching that click in real time — for students and working engineers alike — was the highlight of the night.
What a DevOps Engineer actually does
DevOps gets misread as “cloud, but with more automation.” What the group left with was a clearer picture: a DevOps Engineer’s job sits at the intersection of infrastructure, reliability, and delivery — building the systems that let a team ship with confidence, not just building systems.
